Camp Director - Daniel E. Doyle, Jr.

  • Dan is a graduate of Bates College where he was co-captain of the men’s varsity basketball team.
  • Dan served as a Trustee at Bates College.
  • Dan is a graduate of the Fletcher School Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University.
  • Dan holds two honorary doctorates for his work in sports education.
  • The Sporting News named Dan as one of the most influential people in American sport.
  • For the last 8 years, Dan has lectured at over 100 colleges and universities on behalf of the NCAA Foundation.
  • Dan was a highly successful men’s basketball coach, compiling an overall record of 142-45. In his final season at Trinity College, the Trinity Team compiled a 22 and 4 record, finished the season ranked 13th nationally, and Dan was named New England Coach of the Year.
  • Dan founded the Institute for International Sport in 1986 in a one-room office at the University of Rhode Island.
  • The Institute is now considered by many to be the foremost sports education initiative in the world – and the most innovative. Among the programs Dan conceived at the Institute are National Sportsmanship Day and the World Scholar-Athlete Games.
  • Dan and the Institute’s most ambitious program, the 2011 World Youth Peace Summit, will be held in Connecticut in 2011. The Summit will bring together many of the 25,000 Scholar-Athlete Games graduates in a compelling 13-day program that will result in literally thousands of peace initiatives being implemented throughout the world. For the first six and half days, UConn will host the World Scholar-Athlete Games component of the Summit. When that program ends, those 2,000 young people, representing every country in the world, will stay at UConn, and will be joined by thousands of others, who will stay in Greater Hartford for the World Youth Peace Summit. The Summit will truly be a State-wide event, with activities throughout the State of Connecticut.
  • Dan is the author of the acclaimed novel, “Are You Watching, Adolph Rupp?” which was favorably reviewed in over 50 publications, including the New York Times and USA Today, as well as by famed author, James Michener. Mr. Michener made the statement, “Exceptional…impressive…I envy Doyle’s skill in keeping the reader’s attention.”
  • Dan’s new book, “The Encyclopedia of Sports Parenting,” was published in 2008 to great acclaim. The book has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Dan’s next book, the novel “An African Rebound” will be published in November 2010 or March 2011.
  • Dan has been the recipient of many honors, the most recent of which was the Cardinal Cooke Humanitarian Award, presented to Dan on June 17, 2009 at a major dinner in New York City aboard the Intrepid.

  • Raymond Handlan, Senior Advisor of the Atlantic Philanthropies, which has provided support to Dan’s work for the last 23 years has stated, “I believe that Dan is the most innovative person in American sport and education.”
