About the Director

Camp Director - Daniel E. Doyle, Jr.
  • Graduate of Bates College - co-captain of the varsity basketball team.
  • Graduate of the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University.
  • In 2000, Bridgewater State (Mass.) conferred an honorary doctorate of International Relations to Mr. Doyle.
  • In 2003, The University of Rhode Island conferred an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters to Mr. Doyle.
  • In 2003, Mr. Doyle was appointed to a five-year term on the Bates College Board of Trustees.
  • In 2006, Mr. Doyle was selected for induction into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame.
  • Assistant men's basketball coach, Brown University.
  • Head Men's basketball coach - Kingswood-Oxford School (CT).
  • Head Men's basketball coach - Trinity College (CT).
  • Overall coaching record - 142 - 45.
  • New England College Coach of the Year - 1980-81.
  • Founded Institute for International Sport in 1986 after writing a paper at Fletcher on the creation of the Institute at the Fletcher School.
  • Among the programs Mr. Doyle conceived are:
    • National Sportsmanship Day - the largest sportsmanship program in the world (last year, NSD was celebrated in over 12,500 schools in all 50 states and in countries such as Nigeria, Ireland and Bermuda).
    • The World Scholar-Athlete Games - in July 2006, the World Scholar-Athlete Games welcomed delegations from 157 countries and all 50 states - making it the largest sport/cultural event in the world in 2006. President William Jefferson Clinton delivered the keynote address. Other speakers included Senator George Mitchell and Claes Nobel of Nobel Peace Prize Fame.
    • The Center for Sports Parenting - a website-based program which, using the services of 30 national parenting experts, offers free sports parenting advice.
    • The Irish-American Sports Foundation, an all-volunteer organization which, under Mr. Doyle's direction, raised over 4 million dollars to construct the Irish National Basketball Arena in Dublin, Ireland.
    • The New England Basketball Hall of Fame which, in its fourth year, attracted approximately 1200 people to the dinner.
    • International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame. Located on the campus of The University of Rhode Island, the Hall is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the State of Rhode Island. Mr. Doyle and the Institute development team negotiated grants, including a 1 million dollar lead-gift to construct the building.
    • Center for Sports Leadership Building. Mr. Doyle has raised all of the funds for this second facility, which will be located just behind the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame on the URI campus.
    • Basketball Ballet - a program which merges ballhandling and footwork skills with music, dance and great creativity.
    • The Center for Sports Poetry - a national program which includes recognition of elementary and middle school sports poets and selection of high school and college All-American sports poets.
  • Wrote acclaimed novel "Are You Watching, Adolph Rupp?" favorably reviewed in over 50 publications, including The New York Times, and USA TODAY.
  • Wrote "The Encyclopedia of Sports Parenting.” Volume I is for sale in 2008, and Volume II will be in bookstores in 2009.
  • Now writing the Master Coach Manual, a 200 page manual which will provide coaches with a coherent philosophy they can impart to student-athletes.
  • Founder and director of the Young Writers Institute, an all-volunteer mentor program for young writers in Greater Hartford, CT.
  • Founded and chaired the Aran Islands (Ireland) International Poetry & Prose Festival, considered to be one of the foremost literary festivals in the world.
  • Recently named by The Sporting News as among the most influential people in sports.
  • For the sixth consecutive year, Mr. Doyle was recently named as an NCAA Foundation Distinguished lecturer. Mr. Doyle's next lecture tour, which deals with leadership and sportsmanship, will be conducted at the schools in the Skyline Conference, including Manhattanville College and Yeshiva University.
